population Genetics
Many New Zealand species have seen declining populations over the last century and a half, leading to more than 4000 threatened species, which is the highest proportion in the world. - this according to Nicola Toki, DOC's threatened species ambassador*. This is significant be large rapid declines in population size of a species has major impacts on the genetic diversity within a species. This is known as a genetic bottleneck. The small populations of New Zealand species are also at risk of loosing alleles by genetic drift further reducing genetic diversity.
